I
am a practicing wood engraver, printmaker and book artist. I
received my BA in Art History from Mount Holyoke College in
2005 through the Frances Perkins Program. I studied wood engraving
and book design with Barry Moser; Printmaking with Nancy Campbell;
Letterpress printing with Art Larson; and Bookbinding with Barbara
Blumenthal. I have been a graphic and web designer for 17 years.
I
have had my work juried in the 2005 Arches Student Printmakers
show in Boston. Locally my work has been exhibited in the Frances
Perkins’ Musing Ourselves over Coffee 2003 and FP Artists Create
Anew in 2005.
I
now operate my own press, The Martorell Press, in Amherst, MA
where I produce letterpress fine press book editions, wood engravings
and monotype prints. Copies of my books are in the rare book
collections of Mount Holyoke College and Smith College.
Printmaking
and printing are my medium of choice because I have an intense
interest in letters as forms, type design, and the effects of
repetition on these forms. Additionally, I spend a great deal
of time reading and studying about printing history, specifically,
artisans of the early twentieth century, their products and
craftsmanship.
Barry
Moser, Robert Indiana, Leonard Baskin, William Morris, the many
Chinese master painters and Japanese master woodcut printmakers,
have all influenced my work.
